Less than one mile from my apartment, at Union Station, 22 people were shot, including nine children, and one woman was killed on a day that was supposed to be a celebration of our Kansas City Chiefs winning back-to-back Super Bowls.

I will preface this by saying I did not attend the victory parade, and the reason for that is the exact reason why I generally avoid large gatherings.

Our city is shocked, angry, and sad.

I will avoid venting and expressing my rage at the inactivity of certain people in power doing anything to fix this uniquely American problem, as those days will be plentiful shortly. We will have ample opportunity to express ourselves where it matters most.

The United Way of Greater Kansas City and the Chiefs have created a fund to help.

Funds raised will first and foremost go to support the victims and their families and will also support violence prevention and recovery organizations, including mental health support services.

100% of all proceeds are earmarked for this purpose, and the UWGKC will not take any fees for administration costs.

Please help if you can. Share with your circle.

Thank you for reading and understanding, and it’s long past due to do something about it.
